Despite its name, lucky bamboo isn’t actually bamboo. It’s Dracaena sanderiana, a tropical plant that’s just very good at impersonating bamboo. That said, it is lucky when it lands in the hands of someone who knows how to keep it healthy

1. What kind of light does it need?

Bright indirect light is best, too much sun and those pretty green leaves will look like they got too close to a curling iron (read: scorched brown edges). If that’s already happening, shift your plant to a gentler light spot, stat.

2. How often should I water it?

Lucky Bamboo doesn’t ask for much, just fresh water and a bit of attention. Keep the roots comfortably moist, but not drowning. A good rule of thumb? Top up or change the water every 7–10 days. Stale water is a big no (and a one-way ticket to slimy stalks).

3. What kind of temperatures make Lucky Bamboo happiest?

Lucky bamboo loves room temps, anywhere between 18°C to 35°C is perfect. Keep it away from drafty windows in winter, because nobody likes a surprise cold front, least of all your tropical friend.

4. Is it pet-friendly?

Unfortunately, no. It’s toxic to cats and dogs and can cause some serious discomfort if nibbled. So if your pets are known leaf-munchers, place this one well out of reach.

5. Are there any pests to look out for?

A few. Mealybugs (tiny white fluff balls), mites (fuzz or webbing), and fungal infections (grey fuzz) may show up uninvited. Wipe mealybugs off with rubbing alcohol, use mild soap and water on mites, and keep fungal drama at bay by keeping leaves dry and ensuring good airflow.

Give it the right light, keep its roots fresh and clean, and don’t let it catch a chill. Whether it's curling in glass vases or standing tall in soil, it brings a bit of calm &, if you're superstitious, maybe even some good fortune, to any space.
