ZZ plants or *Zamioculcas zamiifolia* if you’re feeling fancy are the strong, silent type. Originally from Eastern Africa, they’ve earned cult status for being nearly indestructible, beautifully sculptural, and just dramatic enough to keep things interesting. They don’t demand much but still show up looking good. Here’s how to return the favour:

1. How much light does a ZZ plant need?

Bright, indirect light is the sweet spot. But one of the reasons ZZ plants are office darlings is because they also do just fine in low light or under fluorescent bulbs. Just avoid full sun, their glossy leaves can get scorched (and you’ll feel a little guilty).

2. How often should I water my ZZ plant?

Less than you think. ZZ plants are drought-tolerant thanks to rhizomes that store water — so they're basically hydrated from within. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Once every couple of weeks is often enough, and even less in winter. If you’re unsure, skip a day. Overwatering is their worst enemy.

3. What’s the right temperature and humidity for ZZ plants?

They like what you like, room temperature between 60–75°F (15–24°C) and average humidity. Keep them away from cold drafts and heaters, and try not to let them sit below 45°F (7°C). Basically, if you’re reaching for a sweater, your ZZ probably is too.

4. How often should I repot my ZZ plant?

ZZ plants don’t mind being snug in their pots. Once every couple of years (usually in spring) should do it. The tell? If you see roots sneaking out of the drainage holes or the plant seems to be slowing down — it’s time to size up.

5. What pests should I watch out for?

Very few. ZZ plants are pretty resistant to bugs, but aphids can show up occasionally — especially if your plant’s been hanging out outside. Yellow-spotted, sticky leaves are the clue. Hose them off, snip affected leaves, and skip the leaf shine (which clogs their pores and does more harm than good).

6. Are ZZ plants pet-friendly?

Sadly, no. ZZ plants contain calcium oxalate which can be toxic if ingested by pets or small children. Best to keep it out of nibbling range

ZZs are the plant equivalent of that friend who always looks good, never complains, and asks very little of you. Treat them right and they’ll stick around, green, glossy & quietly thriving in their own corner of your home.
