The jade plant’s been around for a while, originally from South Africa and Mozambique, it’s been passed down, gifted, and grown in homes across the world for generations. Some people believe it brings prosperity. We just think it’s a solid, low-maintenance green buddy. If you’ve got one (or you’re thinking about getting one), here’s how to care for it without overthinking it.
1. How much light does a jade plant need?
Jade plants do best with bright, indirect light for at least six hours a day. A south- or west-facing window usually works well.
2. How often should I water it?
In spring and summer, water when the top of the soil feels dry, usually about once a week. In winter, the plant’s growth slows down, so you can water less, around once a month. Overwatering is a common issue, so it’s better to stay on the cautious side.
3. What temperature and humidity is best?
Jade plants prefer normal indoor temperatures, 18°C to 24°C (65–75°F). At night or in winter, they can handle down to 13°C (55°F), but not much lower. Keep them away from cold drafts or vents.
4. Are jade plants pet-friendly?
Jade plants are toxic to pets, especially cats and dogs. Best to keep this one out of paw’s reach.
5. When should I repot it?
Smaller jade plants may need repotting every 2–3 years, and larger ones every 4–5 years. Signs include roots showing at the surface or out of the drainage holes.
6. What pests should I watch out for?
Mealybugs are the usual suspects, they leave white fuzz where leaves meet stems. Jade plants are sensitive to sprays, so dab mealybugs off with rubbing alcohol using a cotton swab. Watch out for spider mites and scale too. Same remedy applies.
They are classic for a reason: timeless, low-maintenance, and surprisingly generous when it comes to propagation. Treat yours to good light, careful watering, and the occasional feed & it might just bring you years of green charm (and maybe a little good luck too).
