Hydrangea Hysteria: From Japanese Temples to Your Vase

by Abhineet kukrety     October, 04 , 2024

Hello again, flower aficionados and accidental botanists! Welcome to another blooming edition of the Times of Phoolish. Today, we're diving headfirst into the wonderful world of hydrangeas - those big, beautiful blooms that are taking over your Instagram feed.

The Big, the Beautiful, and the Bloomin' Obvious

With their massive, color-changing blooms and an ability to dominate any space they're in, Hydrangeas are like the chameleons of the garden - only much, much bigger. From weddings to home decor, these blooms are everywhere. But what's the big deal, you ask? Well, pull up a chair, grab a cuppa, and let's spill the tea (or should we say, water the hydrangeas?).

A Blast from the Petal Past

Before you think hydrangeas are just another millennial trend (like avocado toast or plant parenthood), let's take a trip down memory lane.

Hydrangeas have been turning heads for centuries, the first fossil reference found of the flower variety dates back to 23 million years.

These beauties are native to Asia, but it was in Japan where they really hit the big time. Known as "Ajisai" in Japanese, hydrangeas have been cultivated there since... well, for a really long time. We're talking about ancient history, dating back to the 12th century.

In Japan, hydrangeas are more than pretty blooms. They're deeply woven into the culture. Take the Meigetsuin Temple in Kamakura, for example. This 12th-century temple is famous enough for its hydrangeas hedges that it's nicknamed the "Hydrangea Temple." Imagine a sea of blue blooms so breathtaking, it makes even the most stoic monk want to stop and appreciate some material form.

But wait, there's more! In Japanese floriography (click to read more), hydrangeas symbolize gratitude, understanding, and apology. So the next time you forget your anniversary, you know which flower to grab (and maybe pair it with some chocolates, just to be safe).

Fifty Shades of... Hydrangea?

Now, let's talk about hydrangeas' superpower: changing colors. That's right, these flowers are basically the mood rings of the plant world.

Here's the science bit: the color of hydrangeas depends on the pH of the soil. Acidic soil? You get blue. Alkaline soil? Pink it is! A pigment called anthocyanin decides the color based on the level of pH in the soil. A neat party trick, involving dirt.

This color-changing ability has led to all sorts of garden shenanigans. People have been known to bury rusty nails, pour coffee grounds, and even add lime to their soil, all in pursuit of the perfect hue. It's like a horticultural alchemy class out there!

Keeping Your Hydrangeas Happy (and hydrated)

The name "hydrangea" is born out of Greek lore, with "hydro" meaning water and "angos" signifying a vessel—a fitting description for this water-loving flower.

These majestic flowers have a reputation for toughness but have an insatiable thirst for water. Unlike other blooms, a quick dip won’t suffice for hydrangeas; they require more elaborate care.

  • Initial Hydration: Soak them in a tub of cold water for 1-2 hours upon arrival, the petals too absorb water so keep that in mind.

  • Stem Trimming: Cut 1-2 inches off the stems at a 45-degree angle. Even better, make another straight cut towards the blooms for maximum water intake.

  • Water & Nutrition: Change their water every alternate day and add flower food (or a tablespoon of sugar + 1/4 tablespoon of bleach) to keep them vibrant.
  • Pro Tip: To maximize water absorption, trim the stems both at an angle and straight up, towards the blooms. Hydrangeas adore water, and this extra surface area will keep them lush longer.

A Blooming Conclusion

So there you have it, folks. Hydrangeas: the color-changing, water-drinking, temple-decorating stars of the flower world. Whether you're looking to add a touch of elegance to your home, apologize to your better half, or just want to feel like a horticultural wizard, hydrangeas have got you covered.
